About Asian Violets (Primulina)

Asian Violets, botanically known as Primulina, are members of the Gesneriad family and are prized by collectors for both their flowers and distinctive foliage. Many cultivars develop beautifully patterned, textured, silvered, or variegated leaves, making them attractive even when they are not in bloom.

Primulina are native primarily to southern China and northern Vietnam, where many species grow in limestone regions and shaded habitats. Today's cultivated Asian Violets include selected species and named hybrids developed for ornamental foliage, flowers, compact growth, and adaptability to indoor growing.

Heavenly Creation Nursery specializes in established 4-inch Asian Violet plants, including a growing selection of named Primulina cultivars. Our collection includes varieties selected for distinctive foliage and flowers in purple, lavender, white, yellow and other combinations.

Asian Violets are related to African Violets through the Gesneriad family, but they are a separate genus with their own growth habits and care requirements. Many African Violet collectors find Primulina a natural addition to their collections because they offer the familiar combination of attractive foliage and flowers while providing an entirely different range of leaf patterns, forms and plant characteristics.

Asian Violet & Primulina FAQs

Are Asian Violets the same as Primulina?

Yes. Asian Violet is a common name used for plants in the genus Primulina, a member of the Gesneriad family. Primulina includes both botanical species and named cultivated varieties grown for their attractive foliage and flowers.

Are Asian Violets the same as African Violets?

No. Asian Violets (Primulina) and African Violets are different groups of plants, although both belong to the Gesneriad family. They share some similarities as compact flowering houseplants, but their foliage, growth habits and care requirements can differ.

How much light do Asian Violets need?

Most Asian Violets grow well in low to medium indirect light and generally do not need intense light to perform well. Avoid strong direct sun, which can damage the foliage. Because individual Primulina species and cultivars can differ, follow the care information provided for your particular plant when available.

How often should I water an Asian Violet?

Allow the potting mix to partially dry between waterings rather than keeping it constantly wet. Asian Violets generally prefer an airy, well-draining mix and should not be allowed to remain waterlogged. Watering frequency will vary with temperature, light, humidity, potting mix and the individual variety.

What size Asian Violet plants does Heavenly Creation Nursery sell?

Heavenly Creation Nursery sells established Asian Violets in 4-inch nursery pots. Our collection includes named Primulina cultivars selected for distinctive foliage and flowers, with availability changing as plants grow and new varieties become ready for sale.
