About African Violets

African Violets are members of the Gesneriad family and are among the most widely collected flowering houseplants. Native to eastern Africa, they are prized for their compact growth, colorful flowers and remarkable variety of foliage. Plants traditionally known as Saintpaulia are now botanically classified within the genus Streptocarpus, although African Violet remains the familiar name used by growers and collectors.

African Violets are available in an extraordinary range of cultivars. Flowers can vary in color, pattern, shape and form, while foliage may be green, variegated, ruffled, quilted or otherwise distinctive. African Violets are also classified by plant size and growth habit, including standards, semi-miniatures, miniatures and trailers.

Blooming/Budding plants are selected when flowers or developing buds are present, while OOB plants provide an economical way to add the same named varieties to your collection without requiring the plant to be flowering when shipped. What size African Violet plants does HCN sell?

What is the difference between Blooming/Budding and Out of Bloom African Violets?

Blooming/Budding plants have flowers or developing buds present when selected for shipping. Out of Bloom (OOB) plants are established plants of the same named varieties but are not required to have flowers or buds when shipped. OOB plants are typically offered at a lower price and are a great way to expand a collection economically. Future bloom timing varies with the cultivar, season and growing conditions.

Are African Violets the same as Saintpaulia?

African Violets were traditionally classified in the genus Saintpaulia. Modern botanical classification places African Violets within the genus Streptocarpus, section Saintpaulia. The familiar names African Violet and Saintpaulia are still widely used by growers and collectors.

How much light do African Violets need?

African Violets perform best with plenty of bright, indirect light. HCN recommends approximately 10 or more hours of indirect light each day while avoiding strong direct sun that can damage the foliage. Consistent appropriate light is especially important for healthy growth and flowering.

How should I water an African Violet?

Water when the top of the potting mix begins to dry rather than keeping the soil constantly wet. Water thoroughly, preferably in the morning, and allow excess water to drain away. African Violets prefer evenly managed moisture but should not remain soggy or sit in standing water.

How does HCN ship live African Violets?

HCN carefully packs live African Violets to protect the pot, foliage and crown during transit. Cold-weather protection may be used when appropriate. HCN currently ships live plants throughout the contiguous 48 U.S. states and does not ship plants to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or internationally.
