Hoya, often called the "wax plant," is a stunning and low-maintenance tropical plant known for its thick, waxy leaves and fragrant, star-shaped flowers. It’s a favorite among indoor gardeners for its resilience and unique beauty. In nature Hoyas typically exhibit epiphytic or lithophytic growth patterns, meaning they often grow on other plants or on rocky surfaces. They thrive in various ecosystems, from coastal areas to mountainous regions, and can be found in rainforests, on rocky ledges, and as climbers on tall trees.
Sunlight:
Hoyas thrive in bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct morning or late afternoon sun. Avoid harsh midday sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering:
Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the pot has good drainage.
Soil Mix:
Use a well-draining mix such as a combination of orchid bark, perlite, and peat-based potting soil to mimic its natural epiphytic environment.
Fertilization:
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer with a ratio of 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop fertilization during the winter months.
Temperature / Humidity:
Hoyas prefer temperatures between 60–80°F (15–27°C) and enjoy moderate to high humidity. Misting or a humidifier can help in drier climates.
